Aftercare and Advice

Some advice on what to look for in a piercing studio:
I cannot stress this enough: if you are not 100% comfortable in a studio, do not get pierced there. Make sure they know what they're talking about, are willing to answer any questions you have, and answer them in full detail. The piercing should be done in a seperate room to where you pay and wait. Make sure everything looks clean, if you have any doubts ask about their sterilising methods. Make sure they use an autoclave to sterilize the jewelry. A needle should be used once and once only, then disposed of. If at any time they hesitate to answer a question properly or if you KNOW that they are wrong about a certain thing, run a mile! Once you find a good place that you trust, stick to it. There is no point shopping around when you have already found a good place. If any place is unfriendly or puts pressure on you to get something pierced that you're not sure about, don't go there. It's your body, respect it, and do what YOU want with it. Make sure after a new piercing, you leave the studio with sufficient aftercare advice and all your questions fully answered. You should be able to go back and have them help you out if you are ever in doubt of something, free of charge. And as I have said before, if they try to pierce you ANYWHERE on your body with a gun (yes, including lobes) the best advice I have for you is RUN RUN RUN LIKE THE WIND!!! DON'T get pierced with a gun anywhere for your own sake!

Ear piercings: I'll say it again, DON'T get your ear pierced with a gun!! My friend Krista is currently writing about her own awful experience of piercing guns, and when she has finished it will go up on this site. Anyway, the best thing for ear piercings, in my own experience, is to clean twice a day with a warm salt water solution or witch hazel. I was unfortunate enough to get a keloid on my cartlidge piercing, I was told diluted hydrogen peroxide would shift it, but it didn't do anything. I finally downsized the CBR from a 1.6mm (14ga) to a 1.2mm (16ga??) and it has felt much better. If you fall victim to evil keloids do something about them cos they're unsightly and they can be dealt with. See your piercer if you have any problems with them.

Tongue piercing: See more on my page entirely devoted to the piercing of the tongue!

NAVEL: I have 2 navel piercings, one at the top of my navel, the other on the bottom. I wear either a ring or barbell in the top one and always a CBR in the bottom one. They are both 14 gauge and they are VERY uncomfortable! They're not healing and they're always slicing through my skin and ripping. So I'm thinking of stretching to 12 gauge (2mm) to see if that helps them heal. Anyway after you have your navel pierced keep it covered with a wound dressing for the first week. Change it every day. Don't clean it for the first few days as this will aggravate it. After a few days start to clean it twice daily with witch hazel or sea salt solution. Continue to do this until it appears healed. Don't stop cleaning it after 6 weeks because it will not have healed by this time. Also, don't change the jewelry for the first few months; it will aggravate the piercing, as I found out. This is what I found best it is not necesarily correct but I thought I'd share the information just in case it helps anyone else.
